First Full Day at YCC!

Writer's picture: Yellowstone YCCYellowstone YCC

Monday, June 13, 2022. First Breakfast at YCC: students sit in their crews and with their crew leaders for the first time. It's cold and rainy outside but there's quite some warmth inside from the newmade friendships:

The indoors cannot fully insulate us from the outside weather conditions, however; severe flooding closes the park's north entrance and eventually the power grid gives way. This outage would last around 36 hours. But what did that matter anyway? We learned about the necessary tools for our work projects, from the crosscut saw to the pick mattock. And, of course, hard hats on when handling tools (along with other Personal Protective Equipment [PPE])!

Tools don't only apply to work projects, though, as we rely on them for our chores, such as washing the dishes. But, as the power outage puts our Hobart dishwasher to sleep, we take the opportunity to learn how to wash the dishes while camping. This involves four stages: (1) scrub with dish soap; (2) bleach; (3) rinse; and (4) wave them dry. Hopefully, while camping, we'll have clean dishes that don't attract bears!

After lunch, Mike leads us on a hike that oversees Mammoth.

After we returned to the YCC Camp, the students learned how to protect themselves from bears through bear spray training. Watch them fend themselves against makeshift bears in the form of staff members:

Thus concluded the first day.

ABOUT US >

Yellowstone is offering its Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) program for the 33rd consecutive summer! YCC is a month-long residential program for young people between the ages of 15 and 18 years of age. They must be a US citizen or permanent resident of the United States, its territories, or its possessions. They also must provide a valid US Social Security number.

The YCC experience allows 6 teen enrollees and multiple staff members the opportunity to learn, work, and recreate in Yellowstone National Park. The program is challenging, educational, and fun, and offers participants opportunities to expand their horizons while building skills that will benefit them for a lifetime. No previous wilderness experience is required, but a willingness and ability to work in a physically active outdoor program, get along well with others, and maintain a positive attitude are essential for success.
